What is NZBGet?
NZBGet is an Usenet downloader, it will download releases from Newsgroups and where required will also repair and extract releases. It works on its own or in conjunction with other tools such as Sonarr and Radarr.
Let’s Begin
In the guide I will be taking you through the steps to download and setup NZBGet in Docker.
In order for you to successfully use this guide please complete the three preceding guides

Downloading the NZBGet Image
Open up Docker within DSM and navigate to the ‘Registry’ tab, then search for ‘nzbget’. In the list of available containers select the one made by Linuxserver as shown below and click on ‘Download’.
The pop-up box will ask which version you want to download, make sure you choose ‘Latest’ from the list of available versions.
You can check the status of the download over on the ‘Image’ tab.
Setting up the container
In Docker click on the ‘Image’ tab, in the list of your containers select the ‘Linuxserver/ NZBget’ image and click on ‘Launch’
You will be greeted with the Network screen, we will be using the ‘synobridge’ network we created earlier select it from the list and click Next.
General Settings
Next you will be greeted with the General Settings screen, this is where you can start specifying some of your preferences.
You can change the name of the container to anything you like, and you may want to enable Auto Restart as this will ensure NZBGet starts automatically if you reboot your NAS.
You will also notice a Configure capabilities button — don’t change anything in here!
Next up we are going to click on the ‘Advanced Settings’ button, this will take you to a new window with a number of tabs which we are going to work through.
Environment Variables (PGID, PUID and Timezone)
Next we are going to set up a couple of environment variables that docker will use to allow the container access to our files and folders and also to tell it where we live in the world.
Click the Add button, and fill in the following details as per the table/screenshot, you will need to do one at a time.

You do not need to set up anything on these tabs.
Press ‘Save’ to go back to the initial setup screen, then press ‘Next’
Port Settings
We won’t be changing any of the ports the container uses. You can repeat the ones shown on the right side of the settings page ‘Container Port’ onto the left side ‘Local Port’ once you have done this press ‘Next’.
Volume Settings
We will now be specifying the directories where NZBGet will store its configuration files and where to download files to.
First let’s create a folder for the configs, click on ‘Add Folder’ select the ‘docker’ share and create a new sub-folder called ‘nzbget’ click on this folder and click ‘select’
Next repeat this process and select the /data/usenet folder as this is where downloads will be heading.
You will then enter the ‘Mount paths’ as per the table and screenshot below.

Click Next to move to the final screen.
Summary
You have now completed the setup of the container.
You will be shown an overall summary of the settings we have specified, this is a good time to double-check everything is correct. Finally, click on Done and the container should start to boot.
Some final steps
NZBGet will now be running, you can connect to it by going to the IP address of your NAS and port 6789
e.g. 192.168.0.40:6789
The default login details are:
Username = nzbget
Password = tegbzn6789
File Paths
To make sure you file ‘path’ settings are correct, go into settings and change the following value, this will ensure downloads go to the correct place.

You have now completed the setup and can begin using NZBGet.

Thanks for these guides. I have followed them and everything is running, however, there seems to be a problem between spotweb and NZBGet. I am not see any activity in the NZBGet webui or the download folders. I can’t seem to find where I missed something. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks!

I’m using Sonarr for the TV shows and NZBGet to download. But after finishing your instructions I have a problem.
My downloaded TV shows aren’t moved to the correct location (which is /data/series/{tv show name}). The file stays in /usenet/intermediate.
Also I get an error in NZBGet:
ERROR Thu Apr 14 2022 16:14:29 Could not delete temporary directory /data/media/series/Greys.Anatomy.S18E05.1080p.WEB.H264-PECULATE/_unpack: No such file or directory
AND
ERROR Thu Apr 14 2022 16:14:29 Unrar error code: 9

I actually don’t really care, but i got the first part fixed. I created a directory manually Movies and Series (TV shows). Now Sonarr and Radarr seems to do their job. Not the nicest solution, but it works. But I also use Spotnet from my PC. I only get NZB files there and put them in the NZB folder of NZBGet. I add them to a category by hand like software or xxx. Since I’don’t use Sonarr or Radarr there I want NZBGet to put those files in the correct final location which is: /data/media/Software for software and /data/media/xxx for xxx movies.
So if you have a solution for that, I’d like to hear it. 🙂

If you create sub directories within the /nzb directory NZBGET will auto assign categories based on the directory name for example if you put your nzb in /nzb/tv it will have the TV category applied and once downloaded go into whatever option you setup for the category to move to once downloaded.
That works great indeed. Thx for the advice. But my TV shows seems to be handled by Sonarr and Radarr. The /usenet/completed folder has an directory movies and tv shows and both Sonarr as well as Radarr seem to pickup the files there and rename them and put them in /data/media/movies and /data/media/series. But Sofware for example is not handled by an app like Sonarr or Radarr. How can I get those files in the correct media folder (/data/media/software/)? Is that by adding /data/media/software/ to the “DestDir” of the respectively category?

Sorry I misread your paths we only mounted /data/usenet to the NZBGet container, so it can’t actually see /data/media/software. If you tweak your mount point for the container to /data and /data it will work.

I always get the error message “(/data/usenet/nzb): could not create directory /data/usenet: Permission denied”. Do you know how to fix this?

I checked the data and they are correct. I tried to switch accounts but still the same error. the full message is:
” nzbget.conf(46): Invalid value for option “NzbDir” (/volume1/docker/NZBGet/data/Usenet/nzb): could not create directory: No such file or directory”.
I checked the folder permissions and everything is fine. I don’t understand where the problem comes from. And it’s the same with sonarr

Changed the maindir to usenet as it was written above. Lost all my previous download que. Can’t even cind where it was. Simply does not appear in any folder in synology. Previously maindir was set to /downloads which was not even mapped to it. Now it is mapped to /data/usenet and works fine, but lost every nzb file in the que. And could not recover them.
Is there a fix to this?
Hey, unfortunately if you started downloads before changing the main directory the files are currently inside the container.
You could try temporarily adding an additional mount point pointing to /downloads to see if the files then appear on your main file system and move them over to the correct mounted folders.
Then remove the additional mount point and you can resume the downloads again. You may have to cut your losses and just redownload the files.
Thanks for the manual. I do have a question. What comes in the data/usenet folder?
It will contain all the completed and temporary download files before that get moved to their final locations by Radarr etc.
